CD-ROM AID FOR ELECTRICAL MEASUREMENTS LABORATORY

This paper presents the idea of CD-ROM aid material of basic electrical measurement laboratory elaborated for the students of the second year of studies. Till now, for realisation the task in laboratory, students obtain printed materials, which contain theoretical principles of used methods, their diagrams, and information how to realise the necessary measurements. Nowadays nearly all the students have at home fast computers with suitable memory, therefore it is possible to deliver them much more effective aid materials. Using LabVIEW of National Instruments it is possible to design virtual instruments, which allow realising at home “virtual measurements”, the same that student will realise later in the genuine laboratory. The necessary manipulations with the instrumentation used in each method and obtained results of measurements as even the possibility of the discussion of obtained results enable to understand better the laboratory task. Afterwards, students in the university laboratory can realise the necessary measurements faster and with better comprehension.

DSP EVALUATION MODULE USAGE IN STUDENTS LABORATORY

In the paper the application of the digital signal processor (DSP) evaluation module (EVM) in the students laboratory in the Institute of Radioelectronics of Warsaw University of Technology is shown. The laboratory stand built on the base of Motorola’s DSP56002EVM card is described. The software for the card, written in the processor assembler, and for the personal computer, written in LabWindows/CVI and MATLAB environments, are shortly presented. The way in which the EVM module can be used is also given.

VIRTUAL INSTRUMENT AS AC MEASUREMENT TRAINING TOOL

Software can be used to help students to learn the use and properties of common electrical measurement devices. Virtual instruments are applied here to realize a self-study package. Alternating current measurements can be trained with a virtual signal generator and different types of virtual multimeters. The paper presents educational needs clarified by study diaries as well as the virtual instruments developed.

A GUIDE TO FOURIER TRANSFORMATION ON MEASUREMENT

The strict theory of Fourier transformation algorithms is required in the scientific education. However, the intuition sense is also required in the measurement, because the measurement objects have many projective spaces and an appropriate measurement should be carried out on an appropriate projective space. The intuition sense will be requested in the education where not only conceptual lectures but practical examples and applications are given. One of the applications is shown on this report; that is the image processing method. These measurement methods are employed on the industrial site especially to measure something of moving objects, such as the size of the objects. An automobile flow measurement is one of the examples of this method. A vehicle size on a video picture plane appears as brightness distribution, which is one of the projective spaces of the measurement object. Further more, the spatial frequency spectrum of brightness distribution is also a projective space of the object. An appropriate projective space should be selected for the practical measurement.

GRAPHIC MEASUREMENT PROGRAMMING AND CREATION OF LABORATORY WORKS FOR ENGINEERING EDUCATION

In the educational process in the field of electronics and electrical engineering a breadboard method has been employing for implementing a laboratory practicum. The typical breadboard consists of kits of active and passive electrical network elements and a set of measuring instruments. Following this approach the student has to manipulate real network components which, however, are hidden inside the breadboard, and only their images on the breadboard's switching panel are within the student's reach. The demerit of the approach is that both breadboards and instruments are rather expensive and quite often become disabled. In this paper it is shown how this disadvantage can be avoided by using virtual instruments of the graphic software package LabVIEW.

FACING REALITY IN MEASUREMENT-ORIENTED COURSES - POLISH EXPERIENCE -

Measurement is assumed to be the most reliable means of acquiring information on physical reality. What are the logical foundation of this conviction, and how they should be integrated in the syllabi of measurement-related courses? Abstract thinking has been considered a cornerstone of Latin civilisation. Are we facing the crisis of this paradigm in higher engineering education? These are only two among several aspects of facing reality that are analysed in this paper.

DESIGN FOR SELF-CALIBRATION OF INSTRUMENTATION

Self-calibration is one of most important methods for improving the measuring accuracy and system reliability with lower costs. The applications of the self-calibrated measuring methods is based on the design for self-calibration of instrumentation. In this paper a self-calibration orientated design of measuring instruments and systems are proposed to simplify and optimize the development and applications in the practice. System structures and design criteria are proposed to improve the error correct-ability of the measuring systems. Self-calibrated measuring systems for measurement of electrical and geometric quantities are given as examples in details.

NEW CHALLENGES FOR CHINA INSTITUTE OF METROLOGY

Chain Institute of Metrology (CIM) is a special college multiply supervised by the State Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision (SBQTS) and the State Education Ministry. In this paper, The background of CIM is briefly described first Then the new strategic challenges for CIM are presented, which is not only related to the development of science and technological in the coming new century, but also to the further open police and economy reforming of China. Facing the new strategic challenges, CIM must modify its instruction ideas and its relationship with enterprises and corporations, find more supports from SBQTS, SEM and the local government of Zhejiang province, build a wide cooperation relationship with the international, and do its best to gear its education and training program, featured in the characteristics in the metrology and quality management, to the development of the national economy

EDUCATION VIEWPOINT OF MEASUREMENT SCIENCE

Measurement has two faces. The one is “Engineering face” and the other one is “Science face”. The engineering face is well known as “Measurement Engineering” of each field. But the science face which contributes to not only all scientific fields and all engineering or technical fields but also our human life and human society does not enough known.
This paper was written as a purpose to be recognized a fact that an act of measurement is the fundamental and important operation on all Learnings and all Human Activities. “Measurement Science” is a Learning to most fit in study of the fact and “Measurement Science” should be completed as a fundamental science on the education viewpoints.

INTERNET- BASED RESEARCH, EDUCATION & TRAINING IN MEASUREMENT, INSTRUMENTATION AND TEST MANAGEMENT

Measurement, instrumentation and test management MM is the planning and realisation of skilful mental efforts and natural (biological) and/or artificial (technological) actions to solve measurement, instrumentation and test situations. Standard situations in information acquisition and automation are that we don't know what we don't know. If we don't know, we can't control. If we can't control, we are at the mercy of chance. To get knowledge we have to get data from the pro-cesses and products. To get valid data from the processes and products, we must measure.
Aim of the paper is to present
- modern tools for Internet-based research, education and training in measurement, instrumentation and test management MM and
- modern tools of knowledge management to bridge the gap between traditional measurement theory and actual demands in technical and non-technical systems.
